| ABOUT COYA (Formerly CYC) Officially opened on 1st July 1992, St Moses the Black Coptic Youth Centre (CYC) has always aimed to meet the growing needs of the Coptic youth. Established by Fr Philopos Boghdadi with the assistance of Victor Messiha as coordinator (now Fr Mauritius El Anba Bishoy), the CYC has seen many changes to its role over the years. Originally acting as a resources and reference centre to aid the youth ministry of the various parishes, the CYC was opened from Monday to Friday at specified times to provide employment opportunities advice, educational help to aid in poor literacy and numeracy skills and counselling support for youth in crisis. In addition, members of the CYC organised social events such as camps, dinner parties and conferences. In more recent years, the role of the CYC has somewhat changed, from being a physical ‘centre’, to being an active ‘central’ committee comprising of representatives from all the Sydney parishes. Currently the CYC aims to achieve this by initially raising awareness of its existence by organising a large number of social and spiritual activities scattered throughout the year. In doing so, it obtains a feel for youth related issues that can then be addressed in the future with the proposed re-opening of a ‘centre’ facility. Over the last few years, the CYC has tried to broaden its target age group by utilising the presence and knowledge of visiting bishops and providing events for primary school children through to working youth. It is around this time of year (ie the visit of a bishop) that the CYC is most active. |
